In addition to this, 'the media', as in journalists and media organisations, remain privileged actors within the public sphere as they are supposed to be the guardians of democracy and fulfil monitorial and facilitative roles within the public sphere (Christians et al. 2009). The former aligns with the liberal watchdog role positioning the media as independent from state and market forces and controlling these powers that be, whereas the latter finds its antecedents in pluralism and is concerned with creating a level playing field for a variety of views and voices to be heard and aired.
