Synopsis: "Olsen started the discussion by highlighting the importance of the phenomenon of fake news. Politicians and leaders are no longer in control of their message, and the interference by external events and messages ‘has become the new normal’. With the increasingly blurred line between true and false, fake news is not just a ‘PR-problem, but a democratic problem’. Although fake news itself is not new, the scale of its dissemination is. And while the ‘most powerful enemy of fake news is a strong press corps’, the media has fewer and fewer resources to check and prevent fake stories. The financial pressure on journalism often leads to quick writing and sensationalist headlines. In addition, the social media echo chambers allow fake news to reinforce fake opinions" (2017, June 19). Point: "For me communication is built on three sacred principles of communication three sacred principles the first the sender or the source is known second the information can be verified and third the receiver can independently make up her or his mind with without fear or without any undue influence social media and I'd be social media surprised if not all of us are on some of the social media uh they have been referred to as an echo chamber we tend to link up with people that we agree with so you have groups of followers with the same opinions growing algorithms without actually challenging each other so much and technology reinforce this fact by algorithms because social media platforms know what we like and they know that we are more likely to come back if we see what we like so therefore they show us more of what we like so that we get more article suggested to us which we generally agree with when do you last recall to be driven to something you fundamentally disagree with the question then for us today is rebut false information what can we do about it the first is always rebut false information so if you see something you know not to be true correct it others may not have that same knowledge secondly support the free support the free press by subscribing and paying for information the role of the media is more important than ever and their existing or real existence is threatened by financial conditions pick a few media participate in the dialogue that you believe in and pay voluntarily for their services the third thing that i think we could do as individuals is to participate in the dialogue that takes place and also in the elections establish an ethical platform I’m also keen to hear your views on how we as a society can deal with the problem of fake I think we need to establish an ethical platform and transparent editorial processes for major communication platforms such as Facebook and google secondly education and awareness and awareness of fake news amongst the young population is very critical and um the third thing you can uh consider is to do something like what we're doing health warning with tobacco they are followed by health warning in most societies maybe we need to have a similar kind of warning for promotional materials and content marketing that appears in newspapers um because it could say this information is supported by funding from parties with economical interest." https://www.youtube.com/embed/4PbMFM5Pvs0?start=221&end=398 Example: Mary Anne Trump had said: "Yes, he’s an idiot with no common sense and no social skills, but he’s my son. I hope he never goes into politics. He would be a disaster." https://www.politifact.com/factchecks/2019/dec/18/facebook-posts/no-evidence-trumps-mother-called-him-idiot-zero-co/ https://www.reuters.com/article/world/false-claim-donald-trumps-mother-said-he-would-be-a-disaster-in-politics-idUSKBN21Z29U/ https://www.linkedin.com/posts/barsing_this-has-been-making-the-rounds-on-social-activity-7314954648337936385-6EgW https://www.instagram.com/p/DUq4m6LErA_/ https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=2958662940846609&set=a.989952947717628 Bibliography: 'Fake News: The Role of Confirmation Bias in a Post-truth World' | Digital Watch Observatory.
