Point: "Two questions may be asked in connection with the Great Replacement theory. One is the fundamental question of why people think in the categories on which all population replacement theories depend—categories of ethnicity and race—and why the 'imagined community' of the nation is mostly constructed in terms of ethnic homogeneity. Such questions have been asked many times, most recently by [Sarah] Bracke and [Manuel] Hernández Aguilar, and will not be addressed in this article. In one way, all who think in these categories can be classed as racists, and in that sense the Great Replacement theory is racist. This does not make it White-supremacist, however, as White-supremacism is a particular form of racism, found mostly in the United States, not in Europe, which has a very different history from the United States. The other question which can be asked, and on which this article will focus, is why so many of those who do think in categories of nation, ethnicity, and race—as most people evidently do—find the Great Replacement theory convincing. To this end, the article will identify the core arguments made by the narrative. As we will see, these core arguments are, in themselves, reasonable enough. They point to a risk of dramatic demographic change as a consequence of low birth rates in an existing population and higher birth rates in another population (technically, 'differential fertility'). The basic argument is that this means that one population will in time inevitably either replace an existing population or become so substantial that major social cleavages and interethnic conflict will result. To this core argument most versions add immigration, which, taken together with differential fertility, is thought to produce the same results. There are problems with this core argument, but these problems are not immediately obvious. This, the article will conclude, is one reason why the Great Replacement theory is so convincing" (Sedgwick, M., 2024, pp.549, 550). If not actually racist, Huntington, Laqueur, Chaunu, Coleman, and Pew were at least culturalist.
