Issue: "Record heat waves, deadly flooding and extreme weather reflect an ever-warming planet poised to soon breach safe temperature limits, according to a UN report released on Tuesday, but doubling down on climate action now could avoid a climate catastrophe.... There are no good outcomes if temperatures remain above 1.5°C consistently, warned UNEP chief Inger Andersen. 'Across the globe, extreme heatwaves are already proving that climate impacts will strike faster, hit harder, and last longer, costing more lives and causing deeper disruption,' she said. 'Now is the time we must double down on climate action. We can and must get on the right path. 'Every fraction of a degree will cost lives, destroy livelihoods, deepen inequality and push ecosystems closer to irreversible damage,' the Secretary-General said. Transcript: "Well, amid this summer of heat waves and wildfires, no wonder there's renewed anxiety about the future of our planet. Anxieties that will only be fuelled further by a major report on the state of the climate across the globe in 2025, a year of record high temperatures, increasing greenhouse gas emissions, and rising sea levels. The research from the American Meteorological Society paints a pretty bleak picture. Take the three main greenhouse gases that warm our atmosphere. carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide all reached record high levels in 2025. Record and nearrecord temperatures were also reached across the globe. Europe had its warmest year on record in 2025 with Russia, China, and South Korea all experiencing their second warmest. In the North Pole, the Arctic had its second warmest year in 126 years of keeping records. Surface air temperatures in the Arctic arising at around three times the global average rate. In the South Pole, Antarctica experienced the warmest temperatures since records began there just under 50 years ago. And glaciers around the world are continuing to melt, losing ice for the 38th year in a row. And this comes as many governments around the world, not least Donald Trump's America have slowed or reversed climate policies, even as the planet appears under ever greater strain. And the UK faces a similar decision around its climate policies as Andy Burnham is being encouraged by some to row back on them, especially if, and that's a matter for debate, they can help with the cost of living. Well, very soon his government will have to finally decide if it's going to approve, despite much vocal protest, drilling at Rosebank and Jack Door, two massive unexplored oil and gas fields."

Point: The following New York Times article presets a critique of the 2015 book 'Why Scientists Disagree about Global Warming' ^[Worldcat] which seemingly seeks to frustrate efforts addressing the challenges of climate change. And doing so a question must be asked 'to whose benefit does such an argument advance'?

Discussion: "The book is unscientific propaganda from authors with connections to the disinformation-machinery of the Heartland Institute. In a recent letter to his members, David L. Evans, ^[DeSmog] executive director of the National Science Teachers Association, said that 'labeling propaganda as science does not make it so.' He called the institute’s mass mailing of the book an 'unprecedented attack' on science education. Judging from the responses of educators I know who have received 'Why Scientists Disagree About Global Warming' in recent weeks, most copies of it are likely to be ignored or discarded. But if only a small percentage of teachers use it as intended, they could still mislead tens of thousands of students with it year after year" (Stager, C., 2017, April 27).

You don't think it's 100% likely? Fine. You are entitled to think that. If it's only a small probability of it happening since the consequences are so serious, don't you have to make some serious investment to prevent it or mitigate it? Criticism: "Hardin's analysis relied heavily on an over-grazing parable, in effect a moral tale of the collective tragedy caused by the 'rational' greed of individual cattle herders. We are not advocating a new parable: any over-simplified story is clearly problematic. But the power of parables is in their ability to illustrate a moral issue. Indeed, the subtitle of Hardin's article, was that the population problem he analysed 'has no technical solution: it requires a fundamental extension of morality' (Hardin, 1968, p. 1243). We assert that addressing climate change requires building the necessary system of moral frames, and fundamental changes in governance systems to better manage both first and second order risks" (Brown, K., Adger, W.
