Adam Curtis (2002). 'The Century of The Self'

About: Adam Curtis' TV documentary about the inventor of 'public relations' (and its extension 'marketing') Edward Bernays. [Wikipedia] [imdb]
Point: Edward Bernays https://www.youtube.com/embed/eJ3RzGoQC4s?start=32&end=99
Transcript: Abraham Brill [Wikipedia] "was one of the first psychoanalysts [Wikipedia] in America and for a large fee he told Bernay that cigarettes were a symbol of the penis and of male sexual power he told Bernays that if he could find a way to connect cigarettes with the idea of challenging male power then women would smoke because then they would have their own penises every year New York held an Easter Day Parade to which thousands came and Bernays decided to stage event there he persuaded a group of rich debutants to hide cigarettes under their clothes then they should join the par parade and at a given signal from him they were to light up the cigarettes dramatically Bernays then informed the press that he had heard that a group of suffragettes were preparing to protest by lighting up what they called 'torches of freedom' [Wikipedia] he knew this would be an outcry and he knew that all of the photographers would be there to capture this moment and so he was ready with a phrase which was 'torches of freedom' and so here you have a symbol women young women debutants smoking a cigarette in public with a phrase that means anybody who believes in this kind of equality pretty much has to support them in the ensuing debate about this because 'torches of freedom' I mean what's on all American coins it's liberty she's holding up the torch you see and so all of this is there together there's emotion there's memory there's a rational phrase even though it's using a lot of emotional elements it's a it's a phrase that works in a rational sense all of this is together and so the next day this was not just in all of the New York papers it was across the United States and around the world and from that point forward uh the sale of cigarettes to women began to rise he had made them socially acceptable with a single symbolic act what Bernays had created was the idea that if a woman smoked it made her more powerful and independent an idea that still persists today embrace me my sweet Andra it made him realise that it was possible to persuade people to behave irrationally if you link products to their emotional desires and feelings the idea that smoking actually made women freer was completely irrational but it made them feel more independent it meant that irrelevant objects could become powerful emotional symbols of how you wanted to be seen by others" https://www.youtube.com/embed/eJ3RzGoQC4s?start=681&end=847

Ajax Cleaner (selling product 'use value' rather than 'sign value')

Point: Jean "Baudrillard claims, commodities are not merely to be characterized by use-value [as is the overt focus of the Ajax ad] and exchange value, as in Marx's theory of the commodity, but sign-value — the expression and mark of style, prestige, luxury, power, and so on — becomes an increasingly important part of the commodity and consumption (see [Robert] Goldman and [Stephen] Papson 1996). [Worldcat] From this perspective, Baudrillard claims that commodities are bought and displayed as much for their sign-value [Wikipedia] as their use-value, and that the phenomenon of sign-value has become an essential constituent of the commodity and consumption in the consumer society. This position was influenced by [Thorstein] Veblen's notion of 'conspicuous consumption' and display of commodities analyzed in his Theory of the Leisure Class [Wikipedia] that Baudrillard argued has become extended to everyone in the consumer society. For Baudrillard, the entire society is organized around consumption and display of commodities through which individuals gain prestige, identity, and standing. In this system, the more prestigious one's commodities (houses, cars, clothes, and so on), the higher one's standing in the realm of sign value. Thus, just as words take on meaning according to their position in a differential system of language, so sign values take on meaning according to their place in a differential system of prestige and status." Josie Lewis: Los Angeles-based Vjay Bomb
Observation: I note that the concluding image seems to show a transformation of seemingly, right-wing militia types i.e. 'Meal Team Six' / 'Gravy Seal' [commentary] into United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) [Wikipedia] agents. In doing so, the caricaturisation references the "derogatory insult, most often to describe overweight right-wing militia, who are seen as having all the modern tactical gear and weapons but none of the actual training and fitness required to be remotely effective in combat. These terms stem from 'Seal Team Six' and 'Navy Seals', modified to mock a perceived lack of physical fitness." [commentary]

Led By Donkeys (2026). 'The Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace'
Explanation: The Led By Donkeys [channel] protest [skeet] [forum] contrasts Donald Trump's uncritical grandstanding / hyperbole with acts of war ordered by his administration, including the US attacks on Nigeria, Venezuela, Iraq, Somalia, Yemen, Syria and Iran, which includes the bombing of the Shajareh Tayyebeh girls' elementary school, [Wikipedia] which according to the BBC News, at "least 153 people including children have died" (Ghoncheh Habibiazad, & Greenall, R., 2026).
Context: "The institute [Wikipedia] was founded as an independent, non-profit think tank funded by Congress, but efforts by Trump's administration to exert control by cutting staff and budgets has resulted in a legal battle between the two sides. Trump has campaigned for a Nobel Peace Prize, and often speaks of his achievements in global diplomacy. The Department of State announced the renaming to 'Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace' on social media with a post that said it was done 'to reflect the greatest dealmaker in our nation's history' and added 'the best is yet to come'" (Livesay, B., 2025).
Further to this: "In his groundbreaking book 1984, [George] Orwell [Wikipedia] highlights a series of double-think [Wikipedia] party slogans that are at once absurd and terrifying: 'War is Peace. Freedom is Slavery. Ignorance is Strength.' Written in 1948, the novel was a dark, dystopian projection of the future of authoritarian politics absent the resistance of the people governed. Almost 70 years later, our country is being run by a president who is, in one form or another, building domestic and foreign policy on those very slogans. ... Both Dr. [Martin Luther] King [Wikipedia]. and Orwell, writing from the perimeters of two different U.S. wars, not only saw a Donald Trump in the future of America, but also saw the fate of America if we don’t resist a Donald Trump" (Warren, V., 2017).

Example: The characterisation of 'lions led by donkeys' is alluded to in this explanation of the Battle of the Somme [Wikipedia] where "the commanders continued to order fresh attacks for three months long after it was clear that a breakthrough was impossible to the Troops it seemed their leaders were remote and out of touch" https://www.youtube.com/embed/AtZL7RzBKEs?start=1984

Procter & Gamble | Always 'Like a Girl' (2015)

Messaging (allusions): This ad's scenario (narrative) centres on 'gender norms' (pivoting around discriminatory practices/stereotypes). Given this, it is an ad and not intended as entertainment. In this sense, its purpose (as with all ads) is to present a proposition, which is appealing to a prospective consumer. This ad does this through appealing the sense of fairness/fair play of an assumed audience. In closely targeting such and audience, the ad represents a case of the phenomenon of Femvertising

ABC News In-depth (8 November 2019). "Could Boomer Memes Win Election Campaigns?"

Point: "The new Conservative digital campaigners, both New Zealanders in their 20s, also flew around the world to promote the interests of clients such as Glencore, one of the world's biggest miners, while concerns - which they strongly denied - were raised about some of their behaviour in the office. The pair's arrival comes after their success helping Australia's rightwing coalition unexpectedly win the country's general election, where they were praised by local media for their understanding of how to fight online campaigns. Purposefully low-quality memes based around popular shows such as Game of Thrones were used in a bid to drive interactions - good or bad - at any cost, on the basis that this would boost the reach of future Facebook posts. 'We'd make them really basic and deliberately lame because they'd get shares and lift our reach; that made our reach for the harder political messages higher,' an anonymous individual told the Sydney Morning Herald, dubbing the strategy 'boomer memes' as the content appealed to older audiences. In recent days, the Conservatives have begun purposefully posting badly-designed social media material, at one point urging MPs to back a Brexit deal using the often-derided Comic Sans font. The Tories' political opponents lined up to mock the image, inadvertently sending it viral and ensuring it was seen by a wider audience" (Waterson, J., 2019).
Example: https://www.youtube.com/embed/nj-YK3JJCIU?start=119
Issue: "One of the most concerning trends we're seeing is a rise in astroturfing. This refers to masking the sponsors of a message to make it appear as though it originates from ordinary citizens or grassroots organisations. ... It presents itself as a grassroots movement, but an ABC investigation revealed this group is working with Freshwater Strategy – the Coalition's internal pollster. Emails obtained by the ABC show Freshwater Strategy is 'helping orchestrate a campaign to boost public support for the gas industry ahead of the federal election'. Other examples we've encountered in our monitoring include groups with benign-sounding names like Mums for Nuclear and Australians for Prosperity. These labels and the ads they are running suggest grassroots concern, but they obscure the deeper agendas behind them. In the case of Australians for Prosperity, an ABC analysis revealed backing from wealthy donors, former conservative MPs and coal interests" (Parker, C., Angus, D., Newton, G., Clark, K., & Andrejevic, M., 2025).

Australian Taxpayers' Alliance: 'Friedman 19 // Using Social Media Effectively'
Explanation: "On 29 May, 2019, Topham Guerin co-founder Ben Guerin appeared as a special guest at the Friedman Conference, [forum] a right-wing event hosted by the Australian Libertarian Society (ALS) and the Australian Taxpayers' Alliance (ATA). A week before, his bootstrap firm had played a major role in propelling the right-wing Liberal Party, headed by Scott Morrison, to victory in the Australian Federal Election. Reflecting on the social media strategy he deployed during the election, Guerin describes a campaign of highly repetitive messaging – what he calls 'water dripping on a stone' – to convince voters that the opposition Labor Party would hike-up taxes. Guerin boasts an especially high-performing piece of content was an image of a dog accompanied by the message ‘tax is bad'. In this spirit, the social media spin doctor goes on to explain how 'crude,' poorly-produced memes attracted more engagement than slick, formulaic graphics. 'You've got to surprise people. You've got to shock people. Unlock and arouse an emotion in people,' he recommends, to his right-wing audience. 'The particular emotions we've got to unlock are arousal emotions,' he continues. 'We're talking: anger, excitement, pride, fear. Your content should be relating to one of these emotions'. Emotive content was pumped out relentlessly by the Morrison campaign, says Guerin, and the professionalism of that content literally didn't matter. 'That's how you get what we call the ‘boomer memes'. Because you have to crank stuff out quickly. You couldn't spend too long doing an artisanally perfect graphic. You're going to slap some Calibri font on a shitty, reused meme and you're going to publish it, and then get on to the next one. And you know what: that content is going to do better than the thing your poor graphic designer spent a week on.' This tactic, Guerin claims, resulted in Morrison and the Liberal Party receiving twice as much engagement on social media than their Labor opponents. 'And when most of that is concentrated in marginal seats, that's how you win an election that no-one thinks you're going to win,' he opined, with just a hint of smugness" (Bright, S., 2020).
