Biography: Dan Pringle [Instagram] [imdb] "I've only ever wanted to work in film and television (I blame dad's stories of breaking into the Barry Lyndon prop store whilst growing up next to Elstree) and therefore count myself lucky to have written and directed two feature films that gone on to find audiences through commercial distribution. My debut, K-Shop —a modern, Sweeney Todd-inspired thriller—won the Méliès d'argent for Best Film on the fantastic film festival circuit before securing a UK theatrical release. It was later picked up by Sky Cinema for TV and Amazon for streaming. My second feature, A Patriot, a dystopian sci-fi set in a post-Brexit Britain, attracted an extraordinary cast including Eva Green and Academy Award winners Kathy Bates and Tim Robbins and although the UK rights were acquired by Sky Cinema, the film is currently in turnaround with new producers. Most recently, Die Before You Die [Instagram] follows an unhinged influencer who agrees to be buried underground by strangers. The film premiered at the Manchester Film Festival, where it won the Jury Prize and Best Director awards, before going on to receive a limited theatrical release in the UK. It can now also be streamed for free on Amazon prime. When I'm not immersed in all things cinema, I'm usually outdoors chasing glimpses of elusive wildlife or attempting to rewild our inner-city balcony. Point: "The priority is absolutely on the best take for performance, and frankly I don't understand why people get so hung up on these issues, because if you look at films throughout history, you will see enormous continuity errors everywhere, particularly when you're talking about the Academy aspect ratio where you see more in the frame. Even in The Red Shoes, [imdb] a film that nobody ever has complaints about, there are enormous continuity bumps, and it doesn't matter. You know why? Because you're being carried along by the power of the film. So throughout our history of improvisational cutting, we have decided to go with the performance, or in this case particularly with the humor of a line, as opposed to trying to make sure a coffee cup is in the right place. I remember that when I was nominated for an Academy Award for GoodFellas [imdb] and we lost to Dances with Wolves [imdb] for editing, the editor of that movie said to me: 'Why did you make that bad continuity cut?' And I said 'Which cut? Which continuity error? We have tons of them.' He was talking about a scene with Paul Sorvino [Wikipedia] and another actor who was an amateur, but wonderful, though he didn't know about matching. It was much more important for us to get this beautiful performance by this untrained actor than to worry about where the cigar is in Paul Sorvino's hand. One wasn't want to do that, one would hope not to do that, but if the choice comes between a beautiful, clean line and a laugh, we would always go for the laugh" (Pinkerton, N, 2014).

If a studio decides there is a 10 million dollar project that they want to take over to say Vancouver, and award it to a Canadian company. The Canadian company will bid it at 10 million dollars, but the studio gets say three million dollars back as a tax rebate So the only way to even get considered for that film is to bid it at 7 million dollars. So we’re now getting less money for the same amount of work. Scott Ross: And so the motion picture studios, told the visual effects facilities, that if you want to get this work, you have to do it in Vancouver, where you’re spending a million, a million five, building a facility there. So then of course what happens is another country or region, state, says oh well that’s a good idea we’ll do that we’ll take our money and we’ll take it from our tax payers and we’ll give that to the movie studios and then of course all those people now go to this other place because what the states and the countries don’t realise is every movie they take a look at what’s the cheapest place?
