Briana Monet (2024). 'Seize the Moment: My Journey as a Camera Operator'

Transcript: "the way I ended up stumbling upon getting more work, is I started to Google production companies in my area that were successful. First I went to rental houses and I would go to like, the genie rental houses, the camera rental houses, and ask questions, everyone would just look at me like you know - I guess they're just accustomed to people always saying how can I get on, how could I get on, and they're like yeah, yeah you know, you got to reach out to someone, you work your way from the bottom to the top. Did you AC [assistant camera]? Little did they know, I used to load film. No one believe me. I AC for music videos in Miami, I did this already. I started off as an intern PA and I did it for numerous jobs. Nobody cared about that. Resumes nobody cared about that. Degrees nobody cared. And so, there was no way that I could prove myself - that I can camera. But what I learned... and this is something that people might be like - oh, she you know... saying whatever. But - and not to put doubt in anybody's mind - but, when people thought about a person behind camera - the idea, the icon, the Emoji in the way - was a middle-aged white man. I was in my 20s with locks, black, young girl. There was no way that I had that skillset in their minds - it was 'no way I was as good as I said that I was' because I did not look like the image that was synonymous with the job."

Stuart Marshall (16 December 2024). 'Dan Pringle (Film Writer / Director): from satire to soul searching - independent filmmaking in BCP', Success on the South Coast

Blurb: 'Success on the South Coast', Episode 14 "Success on the South Coast is all about showcasing interesting people doing amazing things in the local community. My guest for episode #14 is Dan Pringle, the Bournemouth-based Film Writer & Director." [podcast episode]
Biography: Dan Pringle [Instagram] [imdb] "I've only ever wanted to work in film and television (I blame dad's stories of breaking into the Barry Lyndon prop store whilst growing up next to Elstree) and therefore count myself lucky to have written and directed two feature films that gone on to find audiences through commercial distribution. My debut, K-Shop —a modern, Sweeney Todd-inspired thriller—won the Méliès d'argent for Best Film on the fantastic film festival circuit before securing a UK theatrical release. It was later picked up by Sky Cinema for TV and Amazon for streaming. My second feature, A Patriot, a dystopian sci-fi set in a post-Brexit Britain, attracted an extraordinary cast including Eva Green and Academy Award winners Kathy Bates and Tim Robbins and although the UK rights were acquired by Sky Cinema, the film is currently in turnaround with new producers. Most recently, Die Before You Die [Instagram] follows an unhinged influencer who agrees to be buried underground by strangers. The film premiered at the Manchester Film Festival, where it won the Jury Prize and Best Director awards, before going on to receive a limited theatrical release in the UK. It can now also be streamed for free on Amazon prime. When I'm not immersed in all things cinema, I'm usually outdoors chasing glimpses of elusive wildlife or attempting to rewild our inner-city balcony. Football stubbornly remains on my personal Venn diagram (despite my best efforts to shake it) but let's stick to chatting all things film and ecology as they both make me far happier!" https://danpringle.com/about/

And the magic of that, of course, is that once you’ve taken you out of the equation, you then can sell that to 10 people, 100 people, 1,000 people, and all that we’re left with is how do we get that in front of people, and tell them how great it is, and how it’ll solve their problems" (Chanteray, J., 2022).

BAFTA Guru (27 March 2019). Thelma Schoonmaker On Editing

Point: "The priority is absolutely on the best take for performance, and frankly I don't understand why people get so hung up on these issues, because if you look at films throughout history, you will see enormous continuity errors everywhere, particularly when you're talking about the Academy aspect ratio where you see more in the frame. Even in The Red Shoes, [imdb] a film that nobody ever has complaints about, there are enormous continuity bumps, and it doesn't matter. You know why? Because you're being carried along by the power of the film. So throughout our history of improvisational cutting, we have decided to go with the performance, or in this case particularly with the humor of a line, as opposed to trying to make sure a coffee cup is in the right place. I remember that when I was nominated for an Academy Award for GoodFellas [imdb] and we lost to Dances with Wolves [imdb] for editing, the editor of that movie said to me: 'Why did you make that bad continuity cut?' And I said 'Which cut? Which continuity error? We have tons of them.' He was talking about a scene with Paul Sorvino [Wikipedia] and another actor who was an amateur, but wonderful, though he didn't know about matching. It was much more important for us to get this beautiful performance by this untrained actor than to worry about where the cigar is in Paul Sorvino's hand. One wasn't want to do that, one would hope not to do that, but if the choice comes between a beautiful, clean line and a laugh, we would always go for the laugh" (Pinkerton, N, 2014).

ITV (2 July 2016). Tim Carr, Floor Manager for the 'This Morning' programme

Transcript: "...The best advice for someone who wants to get into floor management is probably to get experience in the workplace. That's the best way of doing it, I'd say. So, make sure you get letters off to companies. Get in the door and get experience by watching what floor managers do. That's the best way of doing it."
Criticism: While direct/work experience is clearly valuable (as Tim points out above) it's important to make a distinction between 'employment' and 'career'. And so, while work experience is key for securing employment, often when you're starting out, it's not always that obvious where you want to end up i.e. while work experience might solve the immediate problem (of knowing how to direct your energies after completing secondary school) it's less likely to provide the insight required to help you make the right decisions about beginning your career - and so, your career will tend to reflect the opportunities (and their limitations) which were available to you through such a professional context. And if this is worked out for you - you will tend to justify your choices through post hoc rationalisation, [Wikipedia] which is arguably what Tim is doing in his advice above.

Criticism: "Media firms exist in dynamic business contexts which influence how they and their creative workers respond to a series of project-based work dilemmas. The paper reviews three forms of dilemmas or tensions within media-based businesses: identity dilemmas of individualization versus collective belonging, organizing dilemmas of creative autonomy versus corporate control, and learning dilemmas of creative exploration versus commercial exploitation. The paper conceptualizes how creative businesses and creative workers respond to these dilemmas in terms of separating, integrating and shifting response options. It then examines how contextual features of media industry technologies, markets, institutional practices, and user coproduction convergences impact how project businesses and their creative workers are likely to respond to the dilemmas" (DeFillippi, R., 2009).

Jason Murray: 'How to become an Art Director in 2025'

More: "An advertising art director [Wikipedia] generates original concepts concerning an advertising campaign's visual elements. They do this for various media types, including television and film, radio, newspapers and magazines, billboards, social media, websites, emails and mobile applications. These individuals typically collaborate with copywriters to establish creative teams that develop innovative advertisements. Copywriters usually produce the copy to accompany the director's visuals. These individuals typically make major contributions to an advertising campaign's written and visual components. Art directors usually report to creative directors and may work on several projects simultaneously from inception to launch" (Indeed, 2026).
More: "An art director (AD) helps to create and manage the overall design and visual style for screen productions. They realise the production designer's (PD) and director's vision for the look and style of a film or TV production. The AD sets the general artistic tone that the PD requires, using imagery and aesthetics to bring concepts to life. They are the project manager of their sets. The AD takes the production designer's ideas or research and makes them into a coherent, practical space that combines all the needs of the other departments while maintaining the integrity of the designer's ideas. Art directors work to a budget, overseeing the working schedule for all required design, construction and dressing work. They oversee construction both in studio and on location. They communicate with the art department team and collaborate with the construction team, set decorators, props and effects teams" (ScreenSkills, 2026).

Sunny Lenarduzzi (2026). "Social Media is Over, Here's What Will Grow Your Business"

Transcript: "It all comes down to a concept called push versus pull marketing. So push marketing, if you really think about it, you want to think about platforms like Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, etc. There are platforms where you have to post content in order to be seen. And the content that you post has a very short shelf life because it's going to pop up in the feed, right? But realistically, it's hard to have a piece of content that's going to show up in a feed for longer than 24 to 48 hours on these platforms because the only way that that happens is they get a ton of engagement. And not every piece of content is going to get a ton of engagement. Which is why a lot of the advice that you hear on platforms like for example an Instagram or TikTok is to post consistently and to post multiple times a week or a day so that you have a higher likelihood of being seen by people or to really focus on posting at specific times to try and like game it. But the reality is you're still playing this game..."
Point: 'Push Marketing vs Pull Marketing' i.e. "Push, outbound or mass marketing typically involves using promotional strategies to actively market products or services to consumers. These may include displaying and presenting goods or sales offers through different media. This can include magazines, television, billboards, flyers and radio. ... Customers with buying intent often search for products through various search engines using relevant keywords, terms and phrases. Making products or brand content appear in a related search is the hallmark of marketing using a search engine. It typically involves optimising a company's web and product pages to move them to the top of the search engine result pages. This can pull potential customers to a brand and increase demand for its products" (2023).

Context: "To answer 'What does a design director do?', it's a variable position that has a large amount of flexibility. Their daily duties vary depending on the client or employer. Design directors [Wikipedia] are usually a senior role, linking a particular project or campaign's creative team with company management. They fulfil the team's creative approach and allow it to blend with the client's specific vision. The strategies used to achieve this often depend on a company's preference in media type. Source: World Netball. (2023, October 11). 'SuperSport & world netball - breaking boundaries episode 13: The role of a floor manager' [Video recording]. In YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/embed/L2q38Lb9J4s
Assertion: Zama Nikomo (Floor Manager) "I have to be the ears and eyes for the director because as he's in the van he doesn't see everything so when there's any action outside the camera I must let director know what is happening if there's anybody interesting and I'm going to put that in inverted comments ‘cause everybody is interesting it's worth uh talking to but if maybe there's VIPs then I can just let them know half-time we need to you know be interviewing somebody."
Assertion: Julienne Rath (Floor Manager) "Our job here on the floor manager side we need to make sure all the times everything is kept in time from the event side and broadcast we need to make sure players are there for interviews for post-match presentations and we're also always the ones that people shout at."
Assertion: Simi Mdaka (Commentator) "Technical issues happen a lot of times and then that's where you rely on your floor manager so I think that the ladies that we've got here working supporting us they always need to think on their feet and they do that so well that's what the leadership comes in."
Assertion: Zama Nikomo (Floor Manager) "You have to be fit to do this job uh I think generally it has in a predominantly male you know role but we found a lot of female Talent who are just as capable with doing the uh doing it just as well."
Assertion: Hendrien Grove (Executive Producer) [LinkedIn] "It's great to see some of the women fulfilling those roles as well and just hoping to build on that and making sure that we do have women that come through in those roles and exposing it to people out there and saying you know come in come and join us."
Assertion: Andee Mahamba (Presenter) "People think of it as you know Glam you're in front of a camera there's people watching you but there's a lot else um that goes into it uh a lot of people speaking in your ear you know at the same time you have to think you have to speak you have to listen and also be aware of what's happening around you at all times but there's also the other element and that is everything else that happens before you get in front of the camera."
Assertion: Vanes-Mari Du Toit (Presenter) [LinkedIn] "We need to prepare visibly I mean there's a lot of work that goes into this guys there's a lot of makeup a lot of hair and styling this is not how I wake up I did not wake up like this um apart from that I really just try and be on top of my game when it comes to the knowledge and trying to understand how the coaches would make decisions um how the players are making decisions on court so we can pre-empt but also be reactive to everything that happens on Court and just kind of bring everyone back home the full package of what's going on at the netball."
Assertion: Simi Mdaka (Commentator) "I get nervous um all the time so there's never a time where you know I'm so comfortable that I just run with it um and I think the nerves kick in when I hear cure com you know from the from the directors then I know that this is it."
Assertion: Vanes-Mari Du Toit (Presenter) "I'm still nervous every time I stand in front of a camera but you shake it off and you go and you get the job done and I actually enjoy like I'm loving it I'm not just enjoying it I'm loving it now so yes it's a bit of a shake it's a bit of a just get the nerves going it's a good thing I think nerves and butterflies actually make you prepare harder."
Assertion: Simi Mdaka (Commentator) "Whenever I feel nervous for it actually makes me highly alert it helps me focus a lot more and I'm more aware of the words that I'm saying what I want to say and how I deliver that message so nerves is great it's a good place to be in it's a good feeling um and I just use it constructively to get the best out of that production."
Assertion: Hendrien Grove (Executive Producer) "We strive for Perfection right but sometimes you've got to be able to say to yourself This is not going to be perfect but I need to make the most out of the situation and how can I work around certain things just to make sure that the viewer ultimately has, has a good experience because not everything is going to go according to plan which is which is quite difficult for someone like me but I suppose you know that that's the lesson that I that I need to learn constantly that you know find a way and make it work."
Assertion: Caroline Barker (Commentator) [LinkedIn] "Initially before a big tournament like this I'll go through every team so you're sent a list of the squads that are going to be in there and I put down all the important facts you know with netball the height the ages where they played their domestic leagues when they had their debut all that sort of thing and then for me sport is always about telling stories so what are the interesting little facts."
Assertion: Simi Mdaka (Commentator) "If you're the lead commentator you'll touch on something that you've seen on court and then the analyst goes in deeper and then they bring in all the nice interesting stuff that's not um easily visible but it is a conversation it's a partnership and um you have to have just a good understanding of how each other work you know sometimes we always say that you've got two ladies with a lot of energy but you have to be smart about how we exert that energy in commentary so it doesn't take over the action on court."
Assertion: Vanes-Mari Du Toit (Presenter) "Netball is very much an all-inclusive sport even though it's a female sport I think everybody enjoys watching netball you see dad's coming to watch with their daughters and um you get the whole family experience old young um new to net ball not new to net ball."
Assertion: Nontle Gwavu (Commentator) "There's a lot of netball that's been played now there's a DStv [Wikipedia] um you know netball schools there's Telkom Netball [Wikipedia] there's championship there's a lot of things that are happening there's even a Mini World Cup happening uh for juniors for for for high school happening just prior the the Netball World Cup so it has really you know um made the sport more popular."
Assertion: Simi Mdaka (Commentator) "This is one instance where we've really made some massive commitments and I think also just to show the world you know how to broadcast this African way um which is vibrant it's detailed it's colourful there's lots of exciting moments in here as well so I think for me if we just build on that you know um we know that we - we know we're a global um broadcaster and I think our peers out there will also respect the quality of work that we do."

Sergio Páez (7 February 2025). 'becoming a storyboarding artist'

Advertorial: note that this is an advertisement wrapped up as a tutorial; while its content is informative, it's important to recognise that its motive serves the shared objectives of promotion and communication. [Wikipedia]
More: While the video provides a useful introduction, it's clear that Páez intends the channel [channel] to be a place to promote his online courses. This said, he makes a valid point that storyboarding is a specific skill, which is necessarily developed to the depth required to become a professional storyboard artist - and so, might require post-graduate study such as technical training offered by providers such as Escape Studios i.e. https://www.escapestudios.ac.uk/courses/short-courses/storyboarding-evening-online/
Synopsis: Sergio Páez [LinkedIn] https://www.udemy.com/course/intro-to-storyboarding/ of 'StoryboardArt' [LinkedIn] i.e. https://storyboardart.org/courses/ provides an overview of aspects of becoming a storyboarding artist.

Discussion: Presumably, such work is commissioned to either a 'freelancer' (contractor) or outsourced to a design agency who have expertise in this area (where the work is run as a 'project', which the agency manages on behalf of the client). In traditional design terms this latter option is known as 'agency-side' http://newpractices.co.uk/Careers/#iXyBUixBoPE (as opposed to 'in-house'). http://newpractices.co.uk/Careers/#fKSo7aCF_5I

Transcript: "We're successful in reaching those audiences because we constantly stay on top of algorithm changes and we stay in touch with our audience that's really really important to us we campaign for things that they feel passionately about we're fortunate to get thousands and thousands of comments every day so we have a look through them and that dictates the kind of content that we should do going forward and we don't become complacent at all I think in social publishing everything changes so quickly over such a short period of time that if you became complacent the audience would drop off overnight try to keep things light hearted especially on social platforms we find like hearted content performs much much better and make sure that the first 10 or 15 seconds of anything you do is really really interesting." https://www.youtube.com/embed/-dZS2xdm-JA?start=36
